fresh Japanese Mizuna Flowers

Florets. with 3-5 flowers per floret

Japanese Mizuna Flowers are the delicate, yellow blossoms that emerge from the leafy green mizuna plant (Brassica rapa var. nipposinica) when it begins to bolt, typically in warmer weather or at the end of its growing season. Though mizuna is mainly cultivated for its feathery, serrated leaves, its flowers are also edible and valued for their subtle flavor and visual appeal in culinary use.

Mizuna flowers have a mild, slightly peppery taste—less intense than the leaves—with a hint of sweetness and a faint mustardy undertone. Their gentle bite and floral notes make them a delightful addition to dishes where a touch of spice and color is desired without overwhelming the palate.

These blossoms are most commonly used as a garnish in salads, sushi, soups, and fine dining plates to enhance both the aesthetic and flavor profile. Chefs may also incorporate them into herb mixes or use them to top open-faced sandwiches, canapés, or spring rolls. In Japanese cuisine, mizuna flowers are sometimes added to cold dishes or seasonal vegetable platters (known as yasai no moriawase), celebrating both their fleeting nature and subtle taste. Their tender, vibrant petals serve as a visual celebration of the plant’s life cycle and culinary versatility.
